Have you ever thought about the racial gap between races in education or even in life?

"Black and Latino students are 2-3 times more likely to have below basic skills in reading and math"

According to the statistic above, Black and Latinos have a higher percentage chance of having below level of reading and math skills. This absurd quotation and statistic might be true for some Black and Latino students, but it doesn't apply for all Black and Latino students. This statistic is just one of all the other stereotypes on the racial achievement gap. This quote is the same as saying Asian students are 2-3 times more likely to have above basic skills in math. Stereotypical quotes are true sometimes but in this case I would think I would be in the middle. There are many Blacks and Latinos who are smart. This statistic bring up another point, the only reason Blacks and Latino students are 2-3 times more likely to have below basic skills in math and reading is because there family are either in poverty or below poverty lines, and thats there excuse to do bad in school. In my opinion this is not a acceptable excuse for doing bad. This Black and Latino student stereotype is a very confusing one, it brings up many points and makes me think in the middle of true and false. Many Lower East Side Asian Families also live in the projects, and many families are in poverty like Black and Latinos are but they do good academically wise in comparison to other race's. In some cases the parents have a big responsibility in the education of their children. If the parent takes full responsibility of caring about their child's education then the child will most likely do better. In other cases some children are delinquents and do bad in school to get attention because they don't get any attention at all at home. My parents always care about my education and put pressure on me to do good in school and if i don't get high grades then both me and my brother know that we will have consequences of our own. According to what I have noticed, I am predicting that Black and Latinos have lots of responsibility as a parent and they don't have time to get involved with their children and their education. This statistic brings up many things that go through my mind but also makes me very confused about if the quote is either true or false.

  1. look man, first this is a statistic, and not a stereotype. this is like survey for the people in a school. if the school had more chinese people than black, adn all of the black ppl there are stupid, that doesnt mean ALL of the black ppl in the world are stupid, so do not prejudice

  2. This is actually is a stereotypical statistic because if that survey was only from a school, then that represented their whole race. Which in this case might not be true.

  3. Kyle and Kevin, I think you bring up an interesting issue - the source of statistics. When scientists or psychologist or anyone else does a study, obviously they don't test all the people in the world, country, or even state. They collect data from a sampling. I think the statistics point to a trend but do not account for all the people who rise above the racial gap.

Here is the link where I found the data in the first place, if you want to check it out. www.educationequalityproject.org/what_we_stand_for/all_the_facts/

  4. This is why I myself is confused. Those statistics that they state as racial achievement gaps are not entirely true and might not be even halfway true. Those statistics bring the Black and Latino students more down and instead of building there self esteem they are decreasing it. If I were a Black or Latino student I would be a bit depressed after reading those statistic's and maybe even quit school because I would think that there is no point of staying if I am known to fail. This is a quote that is very complicated but its written simply as a common quote. People might think they understand the concept but if you get more into this statistic you will be very confused yourself either if its true or false or if it is right or wrong to put it up.

  5. I totally agree with you Kyle, I would be ashame too if I was a black or Latino student who read these statistics. Though I think I might take some actions! Such as to try my best at school, or do anything that can go against the statistics, because I will want to prove to the public that my race is not that bad, and that we can change at our will.
On the other hand, I also think that the student might have the possibility to quit school, or do something stupid, to gain attention. I am very familiar with cases like this because I think that most of my school's population is made of attention seekers like the ones I stated( I will not bother to name them because the list will take up "a couple" of construction papers and I can't bother to afford anything for scums like that).
